Assignment & brand

The starting point.

Reinterpret the magazine cover through contrasting visual treatments. The retained series includes pop-art, floral Art Nouveau, color-and-silhouette, collage and geometric directions.

Insight & approach

The thought behind it.

This is a study of visual language rather than documented audience research. Across the series, the masthead provides a recurring anchor while color, density, type and image relationships change the mood and reading order.

Concept & execution

How it takes shape.

The five covers show how a publication’s presence can shift from expressive collage to disciplined geometry. Each is shown at its original proportions. The project concerns layout and art-direction studies incorporating source imagery, not a claim that Anton photographed the subjects or created every underlying illustration.

Development / The thinking in motion

Exploring a cover through different visual languages

The five covers explore different ways to organize the same publication identity. Pop-art contrast, floral ornament, silhouette, collage and diagonal geometry each create a different balance between image, masthead and supporting text.

The masthead moves from a prominent top position to the bottom or a diagonal axis, changing where the eye enters the composition. These are parallel design directions. The retained work does not establish a sequence in which one replaced another.

Coursework layout and art-direction studies incorporating existing imagery. Original image credits, including Lorna Simpson's, remain part of the work. No selected winning direction or publication by ESSENCE is established.
